Florida Department of Health in Pasco County and Pasco County Schools Unveil Smile Care a Van 

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease—5 times more common than asthma, 4 times more common than early childhood obesity, and 20 times more common than diabetes. County Health Officer, Mike Napier will team up Thursday with Superintendent Kurt Browning to launch the Smiles Care a Van, a mobile unit bringing preventive dental services to children in need in Pasco County.

DOH-Pasco began a partnership with Pasco County Schools in early 2011 to provide dental sealants and screenings to students “most at risk” of dental disease. In addition to establishing the full-service dental clinic at R.B. Cox Elementary School in Dade City, now the outreach dental program has the use of a mobile dental unit with 2 chairs for dentists and dental hygienists to provide dental screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants for students.  For the 2015-2016 school year the DOH-Pasco Smile Care a Van is scheduled to visit 25 Title 1 schools with high numbers of low income students to provide preventive services to kindergarteners through 2^nd graders.  Last year the dental outreach program screened more than 500 students and provided 1000 sealants.
