August 03, 2016

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2016

NEW PORT RICHEY – The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County (DOH-Pasco) celebrates August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme is on raising awareness of the links between breastfeeding and sustainable development.

“The success rate of mothers who want to breastfeed can be improved through support from families, friends and our community.” Said Mike Napier, County Health Officer.  “Our support of breastfeeding is critical to the health and wellness of moms and babies in Pasco.”

According to Florida CHARTs, in 2015 80% of news moms in Pasco initiated breastfeeding compared to the state rate of 84%.  According to the CDC, support for breastfeeding is needed in many different arenas including hospitals and birth centers, worksites, and communities.

DOH-Pasco provides assistance to new moms through a support line where moms can call with breastfeeding questions or concerns and free Breastfeeding classes are being offered at WIC (Women, Infants and Children) clinics throughout the county.  Classes include topics such as starting out right, safe storage and return to work support.

DOH-Pasco will host World Breastfeeding Week Celebration on Friday August 5th at clinic sites across the county.   Breastfeeding Moms are encouraged to join us to breastfeed and offer peer support at the Global Big Latch On!
